Kurt Eichholz, MD, FACS, FAANS is a board -certified neurological surgeon who is the founder of the St. louis Minimally Invasive Spine Center. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Saint Louis University. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Iowa in 2005. He then completed a subspecialty fellowship in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the University of Chicago under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Fessler.

After completing his training, Dr. Eichholz was Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University, and then became Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of the Neurosurgical Spine Program at Saint Louis University. While at Saint Louis University, Dr. Eichholz performed the first fetal meningomyelocoele repairs in Missouri at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. During his academic career, Dr. Eichholz published extensively on outcomes based research regarding minimally invasive spine surgery, and he has lectured nationally on the subject.

In 2013, Dr. Eichholz left academics and established the St. Louis Minimally Invasive Spine Center. The center is the only practice dedicated to minimally invasive and complex spine procedures in the Midwest. The recent addition of two new surgeons has also made the practice the only combined neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery practice in the Midwest, with additional focus on scoliosis and complex spinal deformity reconstruction.

In 2018, Dr. Eichholz built a multidisciplinary outpatient surgery center, the Advanced Surgery Center of Sunset Hills, which now has over 15 physicians in neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pain management and podiatry whoperform procedures at the facility. Dr. Eichholz serves as Chief Operating Officer and Medical Director. Dr. Eichholz has lectured nationally on the development of outpatient surgery centers for spine.

Since 2006, Dr. Eichholz has served in several roles in the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, including as past Chair of the Payor Response Committee, the Membership Committee, and the Newsletter Committee, and serving on the Exhibits Committee, the Scientific Program Committee, and the Media Committee. He also served as President of the St. Louis Spine Society. Dr. Eichholz also served on the CNS Guidelines Committee in establishing the CNS Evidence-Based Guidelines on the Evaluation and Treatment of Patients with Thoracolumbar Spine Trauma, published in 2019.
