Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Department of Neurologic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN 55902, USA
Ousman Jallow is a 4th year medical student from Meharry Medical College and is interested in pursuing a career in Neurosurgery. He is currently taking a year off from school to do research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los angeles. Ousman is originally from The Gambia, West Africa where he grew up with 2 brothers, 1 sister and both parents. He graduated high school in his hometown in 2012 and was selected as the valedictorian in his graduating class. Ousman fell in love with science at an early age and won award prizes in Math, Physics and chemistry. He then moved to the United states later that year to pursue college at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fl where he majored in Chemistry and Physics. Ousman was fortunate to have been involved in a number of opportunities on his university’s campus that would later shape his future path and prepare him for a career in medicine and research. Chief of these is the undergraduate research that he has undertaken during his 4 years of college, alongside a few other motivated undergraduate and graduate students. His first experience and contribution in research was aimed at the synthesis and optimization of small molecule leads in a number of therapeutic areas as well as the pursuit of novel synthetic methodology for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. He has later gone on to work in the pharmaceutical industry as a research and development chemist. Without being too pretentious, he would like people to be aware that he is often known for striking great relationships in the workplace. In the somewhat limited jobs he has undertaken thus far, he has left indelible marks. He worked part time over the years with the USF Athletic Center as a Tutor and was adjudged to have left the best legacy (out of 16 Tutors). This has led him to take a bigger teaching position at Bell-creek Academy after obtaining his undergraduate degree where he taught chemistry and physics to high school students. He is no stranger to public speaking, having presented a couple of his research works to multiple conferences in undergrad and medical school. He took up many leadership positions in medical school such as class parliamentarian and Director of QA at a student run free clinic and mentors about 8 students. He has won multiple scholarship awards, dean list, publications under his name just to name a few. He is very flexible and passionate about different cultures. During his free time, Ousman enjoys spending time with his family. He has taken on huge responsibility at an early age. He got married at the age of 22 and welcomed a baby boy on March 7th, 2022. Ousman is a proud American having obtained his citizenship earlier last year. He would like you to know that the U.S has given him and his family so much and hopes to give back to the community as much as he can.
