Mick Perez-Cruet, MS, MD. Dr. Perez-Cruet is Professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery, Oakland University William Beaumont Hospital, School of Medicine. He is Director of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Spine Surgery at Corewell East Beaumont Hospitals. He is in private practice at the Michigan Spine Institute, Waterford Township, Michigan. He is president and founder of the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgical Society (MINS). He serves as the surgeon champion for the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC). He received his BS from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa where he studied abroad and published his first peer review article “A comparative survey of reef fishes in Caribbean and Pacific Costa Rica,” a study which has been repeated due to its important environmental impact. He earned an MS in chemistry from the University of South Florida and his MD from Tufts University in Boston under an Air Force Scholarship. While in the Air Force he developed the neurosurgical component of the Air Transportable Hospital, used in conflicts around the globe. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a fellowship in minimally invasive spinal surgery at Rush University in Chicago. His clinical interests focus on minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. A former President of the MI Association of Neurological Surgeons (MANS), Dr Perez-Cruet has also been a long-time active member of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) as a Michigan delegate. As an innovator he has multiple patents, including the patented and in-use Thompson MIS line of products including the One-Step-Dilator, BoneBac Press, and Bonebac TLIF System. His textbooks (Thieme Publishing Inc.); “Outpatient Spine Surgery”, “Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion: Techniques and Operative Nuances”, and “Anatomical Approach to Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (1st and 2nd Eds.) are best sellers and represent the atlas to performing minimally invasive spine surgery. His research interest includes stem cell regeneration of spinal pathology published in leading peer review journals.
