Ricardo B. V. Fontes, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree and completed his first neurosurgery residency at Universidade de Sao Paulo, in his native Brazil. He then completed a complex and minimally invasive spine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, followed by a second neurosurgery residency at the same institution with a focus in adult spine deformity including a rotation at the University of Virginia.
His clinical practice is focused on adult spinal deformity and spine surgery on the medically-complex patient. His main academic interests besides spine deformity include the teaching of spine surgery to neurosurgery residents, particularly those not focusing their careers on spine. He is the Program Director for the Neurosurgery Residency Program at the Rush University Medical Center since 2021.
Dr. Fontes has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and over 40 more non-peer-reviewed publications. Among his many awards, he is the recipient of the 2023 Rush Excellence in Clinical Service award. He is a frequent lecturer and reviewer for medical journals, including Associate Editor for the spine section for Neurosurgery.
