By way of introduction, Nicco Ruggiero is a fourth-year M.D. candidate at the University at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine. He earned his Bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences from the University at Buffalo in 2019 while simultaneously being a collegiate football player in a Divisional 1 program. His background as a collegiate athlete sparked his research interest in competition-based learning as a tactic to aid in the development of surgical skills.
Nicco has been a part of the University at Buffalo’s Neurosurgical Department’s research team throughout his four years as a medical student. His contribution to the research team is reflected in the numerous projects and publications he has participated in. His research focuses mainly on methods to optimize neurosurgical patients for surgery to help mitigate negative postoperative outcomes. As a result of his scholarly achievements, Nicco is recognized as part of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and Research Thesis Honors distinctions at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine.
As an assistant coach for a local high school football team, he helps young athletes become better on and off the field. Nicco also enjoys CrossFit, and scuba diving. Nicco’s passion is to pursue a career in neurosurgery to improve the quality of life for those suffering from debilitating conditions. He hopes to positively impact his community and the field of medicine and hopes to become a figure that inspires the lives of others.
