This four-hour session will offer a meaningful overview of common treatment dilemmas faced in clinical and hospital settings, using a case-based approach allowing for discussion of diagnosis and treatment options. Suturing kits will be provided for use during course instruction and for future practice. The course will continue into a hands-on segment where participants will rotate through stations focusing on clinical scenarios common in practice, including bedside procedures, OR positioning and pressure palsies, common spinal procedures and screw placement.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will become familiar with the basic anatomy of LP, insertion of lumbar drains and EVD's, with a focus on basic troubleshooting of the drains, so they would be prepared to be proctored and credentialed at their home institutions if that is expected as part of their job duties
Participants will be made aware of common spine surgery positioning considerations: Prone, supine with shoulder roll, and lateral and the associated risks for positioning palsies, and early management in hospital/clinic if they occur
Understand the relevant anatomy for the most common spine surgeries: ACDF, posterior cervical, alif, and posterior lumbar cases (approach, direct vs indirect decompression and relevant anatomy) And common post op concerns/findings to look out for on floor or in clinic related to anatomy/approaches
Basics of screw placement: lateral mass screws and pedicle screws, explanation of how neuronavigation works
Basics of suturing: braided vs monofilament, how many knots, how/when to bury knots, how to avoid buttonhole and puckering, what is galea, , avoiding inversion, importance of muscular layered closure in cervical spine, tissue handling, securing drains to the skin/checking they are not sewn in during closure
